Antonio Diaz y Carrasco arrived in Key West as a young child. His family fled from Cuba during the days of the Spanish Inquisition. It took them 3 weeks to make the trip from Cuba to Key West by sailboat.
In 1894, Antonio Diaz y Carrasco appeared before the court and declared that he had resided in the USA for five years and he was allowed to become a naturalized citizen.
When he was a young man, he attended schools in Ke West and was a teacher. He also worked in the cigar factory. Tomas Estrade Palma who later became the first president of Cuba was among his friends. It was Palma who sent Carrasco's name to the Cuban Senate in 1902 for appointment in the first diplomatic post created under his administration. Antonio Diaz Y Carrasco served as Cuban Consul from 1903 until his death in 1915
He was active in the San Carlos organization which sponsored a school where students could learn both Spanish and English. Another of his charities was the Mercedes Hospital.
He was taken ill in Key West and it was thought that a trip to Cuba would aid in his recovery. But the tip evidently was too much for him and he suffered a relapse and died in Havana
