He was a graduate of Mars Hill College, Furman University and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Mr. Usher served as pastor for Scranton Baptist Church, Bush River Baptist Church (Newberry County, S.C.), Summerville Baptist Church, Summerville, S.C., First Baptist Church of Dillon, S.C., and First Baptist Church of Black Mountain, N.C. He also served as director of Missions for Union County (S.C.) Baptist Association. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Charleston, S.C.
The Rev. Mr. Usher was active in Baptist denominational work, serving as president of the South Carolina Pastors Conference, chairman of the Trustees of the South Carolina Baptist Hospital, and as a trustee of the Connie Maxwell Children's Home.
He is survived by two sons, Paul D. Usher (Rebecca) of Charleston, S.C., and John B. Usher (Carolyn) of Springfield, Va.; four grandsons, Jonathan of Easley, S.C., David of Richmond, Va., Abraham (Heather) of Centreville, Va., and Daniel of Alexandria, Va.; and two great-grandsons, Zachary and Ian, of Centreville, Va. Mr. Usher was predeceased by his wife, Edna Rowell Usher and six brothers and sisters.
A graveside service will be held at Hopewell United Methodist Church, Lancaster, S.C., at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 14, 2007. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to any of the churches where he served.
