Growing up on farms during the hard times of the Great Depression, she attended rural primary schools. She graduated from Helena High School as valedictorian of her class. Dixie liked music and placed a high value on education. By means of a scholarship and the financial help of her sister Bernice, she was able to attend college and graduated from the University of Southern California in 1947.
For a time following college, Dixie worked at Columbia University and later as a model of designer clothes in New York City. In the early 1960's, she moved to St. Joseph and became Director of the Neighborhood Youth Corps where she helped disadvantaged young people find jobs and stay in school.
On November 11, 1972, she married Bennett Spiking of King City, MO and they made their life together in the family's farming operation in King City.
Dixie was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Lee Stewart and a brother, Robert Madget. Besides her husband, she is survived by her beloved sister, Bernice Alldredge and sister-in-law, Tomi Madget both of St. Joseph; five nephews, John Alldredge of Kansas City, Boyd Alldredge of St. Joseph, Curtis Alldredge of Platte City, Jon Stewart of Alburquerque, NM and Andrew Madget of rural Andrew County, MO; three nieces, Robbie Gallinger of Emporia, KS, Nancy Savely of Phoenix, AZ and Jacque Stewart of LaQuinta, CA; cousins, Doris George of St. Joseph and Jean McClanahan of Faucett, MO and close friends, Rose Reichman and Joann Olson both of St. Joseph.
