Alvin was born to Newel Daniel and Eula Willie Pope Mahana on 28 August 1921 in Caddo, Oklahoma. His 6 siblings include: Ollie Lee, Eula Nell, Eunice Jerelene, Sadie Marie, Beulah Faye and James Daniel.
He married Ina Ophelia Wright on 25 October 1940 in Bisbee, Arizona. Alvin and Ophelia had 11 children: Danny, Lee Roy, Chris, Ned, Glen, Melvin, Alvin Ray, M.D., (twins) Carol and Karen and Clint.
Alvin was a burner at the shipyard. He worked at American Bridge Shipyard and Livingston Shipyard both in Orange, Texas.
Alvin died on 30 May 1992 at Baptist Hospital in Beaumont after a lengthy battle with cancer. Following services in the Williamson Ward building of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on June 2, he was laid to rest at Williamson Cemetery.
