Jeanne McGraw Barrier, born on July 6, 1931, died peacefully at home on Friday, December 5, 2008, after a year-long battle with cancer, which reoccurred after being in remission for 47 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Clementine McGraw; husband of 55 years, Jerry B. Barrier; daughters, Nell Barrier King and Jere Barrier; brother, Jimmy McGraw; and sister, Margaret McGraw Norman.
She is survived by her daughters, Angie Barrier Pradat (Paul) of Hattiesburg, MS and Jeannie M. Barrier of Madison, MS; grandchildren, D. Barrier Mitchell of Sumrall, MS, John Allan Mitchell and Clemmie Mitchell of Hattiesburg MS, Stuart W. King, Jr. of New York City, NY and Judy J. King of Dallas, TX; brother, Charles H. ''Tally'' McGraw (Peggy) of Madison, MS; sister, Marie McGraw May of Vicksburg, MS; and sisters-in-law, Deen Barrier Graeber and Dicey McGraw Barbour of Yazoo City, MS.
Jeanne graduated from St. Clara's Academy in 1949. She attended MSCW, where she was a member of the Rogue social club and graduated from the University of MS, where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority.
Jeanne was a person of deep and abiding faith, hope and love. She was a lifelong and active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She was also active in the community serving as the President of the Jr. Auxiliary and Chairman of the American Cancer Society. In 2004, she was recognized as Survivor of the Year by the Susan B. Susan G. Komen for the Cure, where she was a yearly participant in the Susan G. Komen for the Cure against breast cancer.
Jeanne was beloved by young and old and known as ''Mamoo'' to children, grandchildren, and their friends. Her door was always open, and she always had a smile on her face.
Funeral services will be held Monday, December 8, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Yazoo City, with burial to follow at Glenwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers include Barrier Mitchell, Stuart King, John Allan Mitchell, James Mac McGraw, Harris McGraw, Chuck McGraw and Richard McGraw.
A special thanks to Dr. Marion Sigrest, Pamela Jackson, Maria Lewis, Brenda Fielder and Mary Potter for the loving care given to Mamoo during her illness.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Palmer Home for Children, P. O. Box 746, Columbus, MS 39703 or to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 129 N. Washington St., Yazoo City, MS 39194.
