Nila B. Hicks

HINTON — Nila B. Cox Hicks, 82, of 104 Union St., Hinton, went home to be with our Lord and Savior on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley following a long illness.

Born April 21, 1926, in Cunard, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Silas and Mintie Buckland Cox.

Ms. Hicks was a retired Adult Protective Services worker with the Department of Health and Human Resources with 21 years of service. She also was employed for 30 years at the Celanese Plant in Narrows, Va. In addition, she was the former owner of Hinton Floral Shop and Carol Lynn's Café, both in Hinton. Ms. Hicks was a member of Beech Run Baptist Church, the Order of Eastern Star and the Summers County A.R.H. Auxiliary, where she volunteered many hours.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Broaddus Orel Hicks; one daughter, Brenda Carol Hicks Allen; four sisters, Lou Retha Cox, Ethel Marie Ingles, Florence Galen Cox, and Sadie Mildred Feazell; five brothers, William E., Ernest L., Everette H. and Hershel M. Cox and Horace D. Smith; and stepmother, Mona Buckland Cox.

Those left to cherish her memory include a daughter, Melesa Lynn Shumate and husband Andy of Charlotte, N.C.; two grandchildren, Denise Carol Allen of Hinton and Joseph Wolfgang Shumate of Charlotte, N.C.; three sisters, Virginia Ellen Cox Buckland of Hinton, Katherine May Cox Collier and husband Harry of Salem, Va., and Wilda Ann Cox Allen of Richmond, Va.; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, at Pivont Funeral Home Chapel in Hinton with Pastor O.B. Angell Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Valley View Cemetery on Powleys Creek, near Hinton.

Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. today, Saturday, at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Eggleston, Curtis Grimmett, Chuck Gwinn, Joe Kessler, Ray Meadows, Timmy Ward, Steve Angell and Steve Cales.
