Merritt enlisted in Confederate Service in September 1861 in Company C, 5th MS Infantry. He enlisted in Company F, 3rd MO Infantry on January 25, 1862 serving as 1st Corporal. He was discharged in October 1863 due to a disability and returned to Wshington County, MS. His Service Record shows him being captured with the 3rd & 5th MO Infantry Consolidated at Ft. Blakeley, AL on April 9, 1865 and exchanged at Ship Island, MS on May 1, 1865 ending his military service.
Merrit's wife was Irene S. and their known child was Charles P.
