Jo Ann was born in Okeechobee, Fla., and lived in Panama City since 1945. She was a graduate of Bay High School, and served as past president of the Jayceettes, past president of the Jr. Woman's Club, district director of the Jr. Woman's Club, and was a sustaining member of the Jr. Service League. Jo Ann and Walt lived in FlaVet Village during his college years at the University of Florida where her lifelong passion for the Gators was born. Jo Ann also enjoyed reading, cooking, and spending time with her family and friends.She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter D. Merriam; her parents, Albert and Olga Berka; and her brother, Albert Berka Jr., who was killed in France during World War II.Survivors include her children, Walter "Skip" Merriam Jr. (Beverly) of Panama City, Connie Ashbrook (Joseph) of Lynn Haven, Winn Roddam (Jimmy) of Lynn Haven, and Ken Merriam (Barbara) of Panama City; her grandchildren, David Merriam (Jennifer), Chris Merriam (Carrie), Justin Ashbrook (Holli), Brianne Biddle (Mark), Kristen Moulder (Travis), Brooke Stokes (Jeptha), Spencer Merriam, Mitchell Blakemore, Haley Cavanaugh and Amanda Cavanaugh; her great-grandchildren, Jacob Merriam, Sam Merriam, Atticus Merriam, Amelia Merriam, Matthew Darnell, Joshua Biddle, Jason, Tristyn and Grace Moulder, Trent and Kendra Ashbrook, Isaac Stokes and Asher Stokes. JoAnn also leaves behind her lifelong friend, Jane Willey of Mobile, Ala., and her special caregiver, Jennifer Hicks.Graveside funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2014, at Evergreen Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Henry Hazzard officiating. Interment will follow. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Covenant Hospice, 107 W. 19th St., Panama City, FL 32405; or to a charity of your choice.
