He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on November 28, 1944 and served during WWII until his release on December 6, 1945. He fought in the Pacific Theater and participated in the New Guinea Campaign that successfully captured Rabaul, the capital of New Britain and a major Japanese base. He was assigned to the Naval ship WHARTON #284-44. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service.
Harvey Paul, of Morrow,GA died Tuesday, July 3, 2001 at age 77. Final rites were conducted Saturday, July 7, 2001 at Worthington Funeral Home, Chadbourn, NC by Minister Hubert McCleney. Interment was in the Piney Forest Baptist Church Cemetery (Lot 42-N), Chadbourn. Worthington Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Harvey Paul was survived by his wife Cecile Owen Yates; two sons: Harvey 'Paul' Yates, Jr. and wife Patti of Atlanta, GA and Frederick 'Fred' Owen Yates and wife Sue of Greensboro; one sister: Sara Lee Weatherford of Wilson; his step-mother: Beatrice Moore Yates of Chadbourn; three granddaughters: Hollis Patricia Yates, Caroline Elizabeth Yates & Kimberly Owen Yates and grandson Reid Taylor Yates.
