Bessie was the daughter of Joe and Josie Morrison who were farmers. They moved to Slaton, Texas in a covered wagon in 1915 and lived on a farm in the community of Posey. Bessie attended Posey Public Schools where she was active in the athletic program which led to a lifetime interest in the sport of basketball. She became an avid fan of the Lady Red Raider basketball team.

Bessie married Woodrow "Woody" Allen and they raised two daughters on their farm in the Cooper school district just south of Lubbock.

Bessie and the family enjoyed water skiing and spent many summer days at water recreation areas. She was a devoted housewife, decorator, gardener, and artist. She was a charter member of the Cooper Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Woody; and at time of death was survived by two daughters: Doris Jones and her husband Douglas of Graham, Texas and Jan Johnson and her husband Dale of Stephenville, Texas; four grandchildren: Cindy Gidden of San Antonio, Kenny Jones of Trophy Club, Pam Kirk of Santa Fe, and Melinda Smesny of Pleasanton; one brother, Harold Morrison of Plainview, Texas.
