Lydia Atwood was born March 23, 1830, in Oxford, Ontario County, Canada, the daughter of Deacon Patten and Anna (Brooks) Atwood. Her family was living in Owen, Winnebago County, Illinois, prior to the 1850 Census.

Lydia married Palmer Pickard on September 29, 1847, in in an old stone house Rockton, Winnebago County, Illinois. Palmer was born January 5, 1820, in Steling Cayuga County, New York, the son of Smith Wix and Affa (Skeel) Pickard. Lydia and Palmer had the following known children:

1. Jane Eliza (Pickard) 1) Greeley, 2) Waddell (1851-1916)
2. Edgar Judson Pickard (1853-1930)
3. Ella Mary (Pickard) Butler (1861-1944)
4. Alford "Fred" Pickard (1863-1950)
5. Albert H Pickard (1885-1960)

While there are only 5 children listed above, son Edgar's obituary states he was one of 14 children.

In May of 1849, Palmer and Lydia moved to the log cabin he had built on his farm. There they prospered and increased the acreage to 232 acres and built "a commodius residence."

Palmer was alone on his farm when he was kicked in the head by a horse. He suffered greatly for six days before dying on died April 12, 1896, in Harlem Township, Stephenson County, Illinois. Lydia died January 3, 1900, in Harlem Township, Stephenson County, Illinois.
