Joseph Brooks Atwood, 87 years old, died Monday morning at his home in Rockford after a long period of declining health from infirmities of age.
He was born in Harlem township Feb. 26, 1840, one of 15 children of the late Patten and Anna Brook(s) Atwood who came to Winnebago county in 1839. But one of the children survive, Patten B. Atwood, North First street.
Joseph Atwood was atively engaged in farming until moving to his late home in Rockford in 1910.
His parents came to Winnebago county in 1939, the family migrating overland here from Canada.
He married Miss Lizzie H. Gleasman, Sept. 5. 1877. who survived. They observed their golden wedding anniversary three months ago yesterday. Two children also survive J. Roy of Rockford, and George H. of Roscoe. Three others preceded the father in death. There also are five grandchildren and several nephews and nieces.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the late residence, the Rev. G.W. Stafford, pastor of the Court Street M.E. church, officiating. Burial was made in the Roscoe cemetery.
