George Martin Baldwin was the son of David R. and Elizabeth (Curns) Baldwin. He was born in Essex County, NJ in 1836 and came to Michigan in the late 1840s with his family. They settled in what is today Baroda, Berrien, MI.
George enlisted as a Private on 27 Sep 1861 in Bedford, MI. He joined Company D, U.S. Volunteers, Birge's Sharp Shooter Regiment on 9 Nov 1861. He was promoted to Corporal, then Full Seargent and then 2nd Lieutenant on 26 Jun 1864.
Family tradition says he ventured out on horseback and was killed during Battle of Jonesboro on 31 Aug 1864.
His brother Charles S. Baldwin served in 12th Michigan Infantry Regiment. His brother Elias Reeve Baldwin served in Michigan 26th Infantry Regiment.
