Joseph enlisted in Co. F, 4th regiment on April 19, 1861 as 1st Corporal, and then was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. He was captured at Hickory Flats, GA (near his grandfather's home) on Sept 12, 1864 and exchanged for a Union officer at Rough and Ready, GA, on Sept. 29, 1864. Afterward, he was promoted to Captain. He was wounded and captured at Ft. Steadman, VA, March 26, 1865 and admitted to Lincoln General Hospital where his left leg was amputated on April 10, 1865. He was released from the hospital on June 4, 1865 and returned to his parent's home in Calhoun, GA where he recovered.

After the war, his parents and several siblings moved to Texas, but he stayed in Calhoun, became a lawyer, married and raised a family. He married Julie Morris, daughter of a prominent Calhoun family, on September 12, 1870 in Calhoun, Gordon County, Georgia. Their children are Morris K. McConnell, William Hackett McConnell born February 1874, and Grace McConnell.
