Death came to Mr. John Baker, one of the real old pioneer citizens of Texas county, at his home just south of town at an early hour last Sunday morning, following a third stroke of paralysis and as a result of a weak heart and the passing of many years.

John Baker was born at Coshocton, Ohio, September 17, 1844; at his death February 26, 1928, he was 83 years, 5 months and 9 days of age. He was the son of James and Margaret Baker. He came to Texas county in September, 1867, making him one of the old Texas county settlers, and one of the peculiarities of Mr. Baker's life in Texas county was that he has lived the entire sixty years on two farms near Houston, first on what is known as the Dempsey or Jacob farm southeast of town a few miles and at his present home one mile southeast of town. All these years, Mr. Baker has been a farmer, an honest, fair, and conscientious man, for no one could ever say ought against the honesty of John Baker. He was poor in this world's goods but rich in honesty and integrity. He was married to Palina Johnson, who preceded him in death some four years. Seven children resulted from this union, four having died, and the three living are Phrona, Lucy, and Marshall. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Margarett Davis, one brother, Barney Baker having passed on February 1st. Mr. Baker never belonged to any church or to any lodge or order, but he was a good neighbor and a kindly, goodhearted old gentleman who will be missed by the many old time friends and acquaintances.

Burial was at Ozark Cemetery Monday, funeral services being conducted by Rev. W.S. Baker. With sympathy to the bereaved ones, the only other word is that another of the old landmarks has passed to his reward.
