Levi was the son of John Tyler and his second wife Julia Ann Wright. It appears that Levi was ill and taken into the Regimental Hospital on Mar. 1, 1863 where he died of "Febris Typhoides" (Typhoid Fever) on Mar. 31, 1863.

He was one of three sons of John Tyler who served in Iowa units in the Civil War:
