INDEPENDENCE - Ira W. Bennett, 85, a longtime resident of the Independence area, died early this morning at the Manor Nursing Home where he had been a resident since July 18.
Funeral services are incomplete and will be announced later by the Potts Funeral Home at Independence.
Ira William Bennett was born Nov. 29, 1886, at Keota, Iowa, the son of Samuel and Reona (Wilson) Bennett.
Bennett moved from Iowa to a farm north of Elk City with his family when he was seven years old and attended schools in that area. After his schooling he engaged in farming in that area.
April 20, 1916, at Independence he was married to Mary Barrett. She survives at the home at Independence. The couple made their home at Independence their entire married life, and had celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary in April of this year.
In addition to farming Bennett was employed by the Rilco Company of Independence where he retired in 1953.
Bennett was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors, in addition to the widow, include five sons, James I. of Portland, Ore., Clarence D. of St. Petersburg, Fla., Donald G. of Houston, Tex., Clyde A. of Larned, Kim., and Paul W. of Marysville, Wash.; a daughter, Mrs. Wade (Edith) Smith of Larned, Kan.; 23 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
