Florence Burns

JEFFERSON - Florence (Shaffer) Burns, 102, died peacefully on Monday morning, March 19, 2007 at Hanover Hall. She was the wife of Jacob LeRoy Burns who died October 21, 1986.
The funeral service for Mrs. Burns will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Irwin Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 175 N. Main St., Spring Grove, with her pastor, the Rev. Dr. Patricia A. Snyder officiating. There will be viewing from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home prior to the service. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in Jefferson Cemetery.
Florence was born December 15, 1904, in Jackson Township, a daughter of the late Howard and Mary (Glatfelter) Shaffer.
Mrs. Burns began her working career at an early age at the Jefferson Cigar Factory. She was later employed as a seamstress in several area sewing factories and retired in 1971 from the Seven Valleys Garment Factory. Mrs. Burns was a faithful and life long member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Jefferson.
She will be sadly missed by her daughter, Phyllis B. Hoover and her husband, Dean; five grandchildren, Cindy Ross, Debby Smith, Vicki Moul, Scott Hoover, and Missy Shenberger, all of the Spring Grove area; 11 great-grandchildren; and ten great-great-grandchildren.
Florence was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters, Laura Heathcote, Annie Sterner, Paul Shaffer, Ralph Shaffer, Oscar Shaffer, and Stewart Shaffer.

A wedding took place on Saturday night at 8 o’clock at the Seven Valleys Lutheran parsonage when Miss Florence Shaffer, daughter of Mrs. Mary Shaffer, Seven Valleys, became the bride of Jacob Leroy Burns, Jefferson.
The Rev. S. H. Culler, pastor of the Seven Valleys Lutheran charge, performed the ceremony. There were no attendants. They will reside with the bridegroom’s parents at Jefferson.

50th Wedding Anniversary

JEFFERSON - Mr. and Mrs. Jacob L. Burns, of Jefferson, were honored at a surprise dinner at the Hill Tavern and a reception at the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Dean E. Hoover, Spring Grove, in recognition of the couple's 50th wedding anniversary.
Mrs. Burns is the former Florence Shaffer, daughter of the late Howard and Mary Glatfelter Shaffer.
