Rebecca Burdette Kendall was the middle daughter of Robert and Mary (Darnall) Kendall. Born in Flemingsburg, Fleming, KY. She married Samuel Macon Cowles Jr. in Mount Sterling, KY

Ben Thomason Cowles (1915- )
Samuel Macon Cowles (1916- )
John Darnall Cowles (1927- )

Always very involved in the YMCA service of her husband, Rebecca was also devoted to the education of her sons and supported many church and civic organizations.

She was a member of the Arrowhead Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She held several offices and served on countless committees. She rarely missed a meeting of the First Presbyterian Women's Association and enjoyed the Browsers Club.

Mr. Cowles served as executive director of the YMCA in Frankfort, KY and in Memphis, TN before being sent by the international committee to serve in China. They had been in Swatow for nine years when the Communist took over the city and the family of five left for the Philippines. Later, they crossed Siberia and Europe and returned to work in Alabama. Mr Cowles joined the Army and Navy Branch of the YM and was its director for 10 years in Boston MA. After retirement, Macon was assistant minister at the Brentwood Presbyterian Church. Rebecca stood at his side, always involved, always making plans, always ready to serve.

She was the Proud Descendant of Revolutionary War Patriot John Hathaway (1733-1786) VA MAJ
