Died, July 9, 1913, at the family residence, West Monroe street, of diabetes, after an illness of five weeks, Jerome B. Coffin, aged 53 years, 6 months and 27 days.
Deceased was the son of the late Major Fred B. Coffin and wife of Huron, S. D. He was born in St. Peter, Minn., Dec. 13, 1859. When he was two years of age his father enlisted in the army and brought his family to Porter county, Indiana, for safety. His father served throughout the war and at its close returned to Indiana, where Mr. Coffin grew to manhood.
In that state he attended Valparaiso college, where he took a special course in mechanical drawing. In 1880, with his parents, he removed to South Dakota, where in 1883 he was married to Miss Kate Catlin, who died in a short time. To the first union two children born, both of whom are dead.
In 1889 he was again united in marriage, this time to Miss Minnie Turner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George L. Turner of Huron, S. D. They resided in Dakota for two years, then removing to Illinois, and for the past twenty-one years he had been a resident of Springfield, being engaged continuously in the contracting business. He was a member of the Second Presbyterian church.
Surviving are his wife and two daughters, Gladys and Helen Francis Coffin, residing at home; one adopted son, Arthur Hubbard; two sisters, Mrs. Martha D. Wilson of Tipton, Iowa, and Mrs. Emma Miner of Huron, S. D.; also one brother, Arthur T. Coffin, of LaPorte City, Iowa.
