Brooks Penland, 85, of Horton Creek, entered his eternal rest Monday, May 28, 2007, in Mission Hospital. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Rev. Walser and Essie Penland. He was also preceded in death by a half sister, Edna Ray. He was a retired carpenter and farmer.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Jennie Holcombe Penland; a son, Donald Penland and wife, Brenda; a grandson, Darren Penland; two sisters, Robema Ledford and husband, Porter, and Shelby Jean Fox and husband, Eugene, all of Burnsville; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. The Rev. Philip Garland will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Academy Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Eddie Banks, Eddie Fisher, Jim Sherlin, Eugene Fox, Maurice Penland and James Benfield.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
