Bucyrus Public Library records show her the daughter of Christian Fritz, who married William N. Witter in 1830 in Rockingham, NC. We know that she used the name Catherine and Barbara at different times and in different publications. It may be after their son Alexander married a Catherine, to keep their identities separate she started using her middle name Barbara.
An old family tale (from son John Witter family descendents) was that her husband, William, had to learn German in order to communicate with her.
