Theresa married John Hess in Luxembourg. They were the parents of Johann, Nick, John, and Margaret.

May 31, 1892 - Carroll Sentinel - Mrs. John Hess, mother of J.P. Hess, cashier of the German bank, died in this city Sunday noon in the eightieth year of her age. She had been unable to leave her bed for the past three months and just wasted away to a shadow, retaining her consciousness to the last. The funeral look place this morning at 10 o'clock from St. Peter and Paul's Catholic church, Rev. Father Nacke delivering the funeral sermon. A large number of friends of the deceased attended to pay their last respects to a most worthy and respected lady.

Mrs. Hess came to this country with her husband and family from Luxembourg in 1859, first settling in the eastern part of the state, afterwards removing to this county. Besides J.P., she leaves a daughter, Mrs. Schiltz, living in this city; and two sons, who live in the eastern part of the state and were unable to attend the funeral because of sickness in their own families, to mourn her loss. They have the sympathy of the entire community in their affliction.

May 1892 - Carroll Sentinel - Herewith is the sad report that on Sunday morning at 11:30 Mrs. John Hess passed away peacefully, having resigned to the will of God.

When her dear husband, with whom she had lived in a true Christian marriage for 43 years, preceded her in death on 29 April 1890, she already felt that her hour was not far off, and after she suffered a stroke a year ago, she did not recover. She was bed-ridden for three months and bore her suffering with Christian patience until her death ensued.

The deceased was born in Luxemburg. She moved to America with her husband in 1859 and settled in St. Donatus near Dubuque. The family later moved to Waterloo, and moved to Carroll in 1885.

At her grave mourn three sons and a daughter, of whom the oldest, Johann, lives near Waterloo. Then follows the daughter, Mrs. Schiltz, Nick lives in Buncombe near Dubuque, and John P. Hess, the teller at the local German Bank.

A solemn funeral for the deceased was celebrated Tuesday morning at 10:00 at the local Saints Peter and Paul Church, after which the burial took place with a large attendance of mourners.
