Dr. J. T. Glass Claimed By Death After An Extended illness

Again Clifton has been called upon to mourn the passing of a most highly respected and beloved citizen, Dr. J. T. Glass.

Dr. James Thomas Glass was born in Georgia, November 17, 1857 and after a lingering illness, passed to his long-anticipated reward at 4:10 p.m., February 7, 1939, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. P. Jones, in Clifton. He came to Texas with his parents when quite young. The family settled near West, Texas, but as the children grew up, they became important factors in the social, civic, and religious welfare of Hill County.

When twenty-five years of age, Dr. Glass sought and won the heart and hand of Miss Annie Strange. At this time they were both teaching in the Kopperl school. They were happily maried December 23, 1882. Later he received his M.D. degree from the University of Louisville, School of Medicine. To this union ten children were born, all of whom reached years of maturity. One son, Turner Glass, preceded his father and mother in death. The long life together of Dr. Glass and wife was broken in August, 1938, when Mrs. Glass went home to be with her Savior.

The nine remaining children are: Mrs. Barney Arthur, Plainview, Texas; Mrs. Marjorie Geisendorff, Curtis Glass and Dennis Glass, Beaumont; Floyd Glass; Ray Glass, Houston; Mrs. J. L. Dunnica, Huntsville; Mrs. George Schulze, Roseville, California, and Mrs. H. P. Jones, Clifton. Dr. Glass is also survived by two sisters and one brother: Mrs. Annie Womack, Clifton; Mrs. Lela May, Frederick, Oklahoma; Mr. David Glass, Marlin, Texas.

For seventeen years Dr. Glass practiced medicine in the Womack community, but for many years he had made and counted Clifton his home. As a citizen, a Christian and physician he made service the key-word of his life. He was a charter member of the Childress Baptist Church out east of Clifton. He was a deacon, and for years has been an active and honored member of the Clifton Baptist Church.

Dr. Glass was a Master Mason. He served as County Health Officer and was a member of the Bosque County and State Medical Associations. He was an ardent advocate of public free schools and was president of the Clifton Board of Education at the time the present public school building was erected. During his long life his heart and hand eagerly sought the place of real service. His body is dead, but his life lives on.

Funeral services were conducted at the First Baptist Church, Clifton, Texas, Thursday morning, February 9, by the pastor, Rev. Wallace Clark, assisted by Rev. Hayden Edwards, pastor of the First Methodist Church, Rev. Fred Hopkins, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, and Rev. J. P. Gilliam, a retired Baptist minister and long-time friend of the family. Masonic services followed at the grave in Clifton Cemetery, conducted by O. W. Schow, with E. S. Parks as Marshal.

The pallbearers were: C. D. Handley, Harry Womack, Ira Callan, Arthur Hyles, Hector Hill, Alyet Townley. Honorary pallbearers: All Masons and intimate friends of the family.
