Services for Samuel E. Baker Sr., 68 of 3934 Wapello Ave., will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at Runge Mortuary. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today. He died Tuesday at St. Luke's Hospital, Davenport, after a lengthy illness.

He retired in 1985 as a mechanist at Davenport Machine and Foundry.

Mr. Baker married Frances Sambdman in 1946. He later married Josephine "Patty" Wheeler.

During World War II, he served with the Army's Lightning Division. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries he received at the Battle of the Bulge.

He enjoyed fishing and flower gardening.

Memorials may be made to the Dialysis Unit at St. Luke's Hospital.

Survivors include his wife; daughters Beverly (Mrs. Jeffrey) Cromer, Bettendorf; Carol Christensen and Yenette (Mrs. Richard) Manley, both of Charlotte, N.C.; Nancy (Mrs. Norbert) Loos, Muscatine, Iowa; and Ruby (Mrs. Brian) Lather, Emporia, Kan.; sons, Samuel E. Jr. and Steven J, both of Wilton, Iowa; Ronald R., of Maquoketa, Iowa; and Larry B., San Diego; 15 grandchildren; sisters, Garnett (Mrs. William) Weis and Claudienne Sales, both of Bettendorf; and Blanche (Mrs. Roland) Rauch, Princeton, Iowa; and brothers, Forrest Baker, Las Cruces, N.M.; and William Van Pelt, Berkeley, Calif.
