Melva Mahan had a love for teaching that carried
NIXON Melva Mahan had a love for teaching that carried her through a 36-year career in education.
Mahan, 89, died Thursday.
Born in Pandora in 1901, Mahan moved to Nixon as a child and graduated from high school there.
She began teaching in 1933 in Pleasant Valley. She often would stop on the way to work to pick up some of her students, said her daughter Mary Richard of San Antonio.
"Some of the kids used to hang on to the outside of the car when there wasn't room inside," her daughter said.
She worked in Pleasant Valley until 1938, when she returned to Pandora where she taught until 1945. el2 cf4,12 Taught at Trinity el2 cf25,9.5 While teaching, Mahan attended weekend classes at Trinity University and earned at bachelor's degree in education in 1942. She received a master's degree in education from Trinity in 1956.
Mahan taught elementary school in Nixon from 1945 until her retirement in 1969.
Her hobbies included cooking.
She also enjoyed driving and often would get into her car and simply drive, her granddaughter said.
"She liked to have the scream of death behind her," said her granddaughter Lydia King of Houston. "She was no slow driver. She just liked to go."
Mahan also was a member of the Texas State Teachers Association and National Education Association.
Other survivors include two sons, Coyle Mahan of Leesville and Bill Mahan of Beasley; two daughters, Mildred Harvey of Bracketville and Nettie Cook of San Antonio; one brother, Raymond West of Pandora; one sister, Edith Talley of Pandora; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and two great-great- grandchildren.
