Born May 10, 1954, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of the late Wallace (Tot) Howerton Sr. and the late Jearlean Hutchins Howerton. One sister, Ollie Marie Miller predeceased her.
She was a member of New Mine Creek Progressive Baptist Church in Blairs, and was employed with Team Nurse.
Survivors include three sons, Darry Carter of Brooklyn, N.Y., Thomas Carter and Acey Carter, both of Richmond; three daughters, Charlean Bennett (Tasheen) of Brooklyn, N.Y., Crystal Cunningham (Corey) and Walnessa Carter, both of Danville; six brothers, Wallace Howerton Jr. of South Boston, Darry Howerton, Steven Ray Howerton of Danville, Earl Howerton of Richmond, Lawrence Howerton of Waldorf, Md., Calvin Howerton (Bobbie) of South Boston; four sisters, Judy Howerton of South Boston, Lucinda Williams (Robert) of Halifax, Lenora Kay of Salem and Dr. Barbara Williams (Horace) of Waldorf, Md.; 10 grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Elder William Howerton will conduct a funeral service on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. from Mountain Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She attended Halifax and Pittsylvania County Public schools. Elritha attained a license as a Certified Nursing Assistant and also earned a degree as a Computer Software Specialist from National College of Business and Technology in Danville, VA. She was manager/proprietor of Tot's Place and was active with the Southside Outreach Group - a non-profit organization providing housing opportunities for low-moderate income families. Left to cherish her memories are three daughters: Charlean Bennett (Tasheen); Crystal Cunningham (Corey) and Walnessa Carter; three sons, Acey, Thomas and Darry Carter; six granddaughters, four grandsons; four sisters, Barbara Williams (Horace); Lucinda Williams (Robert); Judy Howerton and Lenora Womack; six brothers, Wallace Jr., Darry, Calvin, Earl Lawrence and Steven; one aunt, one uncle and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by one sister, Ollie Miller.
