James married Miss Mary Ann Fletcher in 1898, and his mother lived with them until her death in 1919 – first in Bowdon in the old Fletcher house, and later in Carrollton, GA, where they had a large house on Spring Street, still standing in 1980. In 1919 he bought over 4000 acres of his father's (Thomas P. Johnson) farm in Troup Co. The 1930 census shows James as "manager - furniture store." This store was in fact the old Johnson General Store he moved from Bowdon when his older brother Tom Johnson died suddenly in 1917 and James became executor. Both James and Mary Ann are buried at Carrollton City Cemetery.
