Clyde—Captain Billy Q. McDonald, age 75, died on Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on August 28, 1932 in Lillington in Harnett County, NC. He was the seventh son of Colin Monroe and Sally Thomas McDonald of Lillington. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and one sister.

Mr. McDonald was a US Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict and retired from the North Carolina Highway Patrol in 1990 with 35 years of faithful and outstanding service. He and his family served in many counties across the state of North Carolina and made many friends at each duty station. Having moved up through the ranks of the State Highway Patrol, he retired as Captain and Troop commander of Troop G in Asheville. His dedication to the community led to serving as President and member of the Haywood Electric Membership Corporation for over ten years. As a faithful member of Crabtree United Methodist Church, Billy was led to serve on various committees and touched many lives through his service to the church.

A loving and devoted husband and father, Mr. McDonald is survived by his wife of 53 years, Grace Patterson McDonald, and three children, Debby Coughlin and her husband, David, of Buford, GA, Dale Patterson McDonald and his wife, Marcia, of Waynesville, and Susan Elaine McDonald and her partner, Nancy Hyman, of Charlotte. Billy was the proud grandfather of eight grandsons and one granddaughter. They are Mat Coughlin of Suwanee, GA, Wil Coughlin and fiancée, Ashley Lloyd, of Buford, GA, Andrew Coughlin of Buford, GA, Patrick and Adam McDonald of Waynesville, and Azalea, Alphonzo, Charles, and Zac McDonald of Charlotte. A brother, Eddy McDonald and wife, Helen, of Lillington, NC and one sister, Nora Blanchard and her husband, Rudolph, of Buies Creek, NC also survive Mr. McDonald.

Burial will follow at Dawn Memory Gardens.
