DECEMBER 16 1911

WILLIAMSBURG, VA., December 15- The funeral of the late John L. Mercer, former Mayor of Williamsburg and distinquised citizen, took place from Bruton Parish Church this afternoon at 3 o'clock, and was largely attended. The courthouse bell was tolled while the funeral cortege was passing, as a mark of respect to the dead.
Magruder-Ewell Camp, Confederate Veterans; the Williamsburg City Council and the vestry of Bruton Parish Church, of which organizations Mr. Mercer had long been a member, attended the funeral as a body.
The Episcopal service was read by the rector, the Reverend E. Ruffin Jones. There were many handsome floral offerings, special designs coming from the officers of the Eastern State Hospital and the Williamsburg City Council.

The burial was in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Colonel Joseph Bidgood and Hugh W. Jones were among the Richmond people who attended the funeral.
