Edith Vernell "Nell" Lewis, 88, a resident of Morton died Monday, November 17, 2008, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Funeral services will be 1 pm today at Independence United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation was held Monday evening from 5-9 pm at the funeral home. Rev. Eugene Banes and Rev. Art Kinstley will officiate the services.
Ott and Lee Funeral Home of Morton will be in charge of the arrangements.

Nell was born January 27, 1920, in the Scott Co. community of Cooperville to John Thomas and Florence (Miley) Cooper.

Nell lovingly dedicated her adult life to her family, her church and her community.
Nell switched religious affiliation after her marriage, moving her membership from Springfield Baptist Church to the First Baptist Church of Morton and later to the Independence United Methodist Church where her husband was a member. Her service to her church was exemplary and she was devoted to every facet of church activity, serving for over twenty years as church treasurer.

Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Peek; grandson, Timothy Phillips; and a great grandson, Kurt McCurdy.

Mrs. Lewis is survived by her five children, Robert Junior Lewis and his wife, Sarah of Livingston, LA, Ricky Lee Lewis and his wife Sandy of Brandon, MS, Trudy Beatrice Phillips, Dorothy Nell Purvis and her husband, Edgar, and William Jim Lewis and wife, Christine, all of Morton, MS. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

The family wishes to thank all of those that participated in the care of Nell during the last six years, especially the staff at St. Catherine Village, Madison, MS and the staff at MS. Care Center, Morton, MS.

In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the Children's Cancer Clinic at University Medical Center in Jackson, MS or the Independence United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund.
