Edna Calfee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S.W. Calfee was born March 2, 1883 and died at the home of her parents in east Mt. Ayr Friday morning January 1, 1897. She had been sick about two years of consumption, and last spring her life had been despaired of, but she had been much better during the summer and fall, and her friends had hoped for her complete recovery. She took a severe cold about two weeks ago, and her physical condition was such that she could not rally from the attack. She was uncomplaining and patient during her sickness, and bore her suffering with Christian fortitude.
The funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at two 0'clock at the residence by Rev. H.T. Jackson, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Rose Hill cemetery. The family has the sympathy of many friends in their bereavement.
(Obituary from "Twice-a-Week News,", Mount Ayr, Iowa, January 5, 1897.
"... She was nearly fourteen years of age, and an unusally bright and interesting child."
(From an obituary, source unknown.)
