EVA MAY FOSTER

Eva May Foster, daughter of Manuel and Sarah Shockley Foster, early pioneers of this county, was born in Lucas county, May 29, 1872, and passed away April 14, 1951, at her home in Chariton, Iowa, where she has been tenderly cared for the past four years by a nephew, Gerald Foster and his wife.

She was the youngest of eleven children, all of whom having preceded her in death. She was educated in the Lucas county schools.

In early girlhood she united with the Oxford Methodist church, later transferring her membership to the Chariton Methodist church and in which she has always kept and active interest although unable to attend regularly.

At three years of age Miss Foster was stricken with, what is now believed to have been polio and the courage and fortitude with which she endured this affliction won her the admiration of her relatives and many friends. She was ever mindful of afflicted children, always contributing generously in a way which she thought would be most helpful to them. For her fondness of and kindness to children she was rewarded with a very deep affection from them.

In spite of the handicap that overtook her in childhood she was always industrious and helpful in the home and her hands were never idle. Since the war her sympathy for the unfortunate in foreign lands knew no bounds. Among her activities for them was the regular contribution of wearing apparel and household necessities to a teacher in Holland and her family. Until her eyesight failed she kept busy sewing for Blank Memorial hospital which was a source of real enjoyment for her.

When her sister, Stella, passed away in 1947, her friends felt her grief at her loss would be unsurmountable since their lives had been so closely intertwined because of her infirmaties. However, she kept a commendable and steady hold upon the realities of life and her cheerful acceptance of her lot was a marvel to her loved ones as she began again with renewed courage to carry on bravely and victoriously.

Many relatives and friends sorrow at her passing but all rejoice in the assurance of her happy reunion with her loved ones who have gone before.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Robert Swick, were held at the Beardsley funeral home April 17 at 2 p.m., with interment in the Oxford cemetery. Pallbearers were her nephews: Clyde Foster, Gail Clowser, Bruce Prior, Fred Taylor and Guy Foster.

Out of town relatives attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Kirk McDowell, Victoria, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Don Foster, McComb, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Miles Foster, Chicago, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Moyer, Mrs. Fern Thompson and Mrs. Mont Grant, all of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Lester Kenney and Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Foster, of Knoxville, Iowa.

Daughter of Manuel Foster and Sarah Ann Shockley. She never married.
