SUNNYLAND -- Margaret Dorothy Griffin, 88, of 201 Bess St. died at her home at 2:14 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007.

She was born May 19, 1918, in Princeville, the daughter of Terrance Elias and Rose Olive Alice Carroll Smith. She was raised and schooled in Princeville. In 1939, she began working at the Woolen Mill in Lacon, where she met her future husband. They were engaged in 1942. After his discharge from the Army after World War II, she married her one and only love, George E. Griffin on Nov. 24, 1945, who preceded her in death on Feb. 26, 1999.

Surviving are two sons, Gary E. (wife Marilee) of Springfield and Larry E. of Sunnyland. She is also survived by two granddaughters, Mrs. Ryan (Rebecca) Alexander of Indianapolis, Ind., and Kathleen of Springfield; and two sisters, Mrs. Lester (Shirley) Rodgers of Marceline, Mo., and Mrs. Melvin (Betty) Malone of Sunnyland.

Four brothers and one sister preceded her in death.

She is also survived by 15 nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Mrs. Griffin was a 51-year member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Washington.

She was a homemaker while her children were young and later was an employee of Carson Pirie Scott and Company for approximately 15 years, retiring in 1977.

Dorothy was a beloved wife to George and a devoted mother to her boys. She was loved by her sisters and brothers, adored by her granddaughters and daughter-in-law and a true friend to all who knew her.

She was a self-taught quilt maker, beginning about 1978, making many beautiful quilts which she enjoyed presenting to family and friends of the St. Patrick Thursday quilting club where she and her fellow quilters made many quilts while enjoying fun and fellowship. Their homemade quilts are used as special gifts for parish members and for fund-raisers for the church.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Washington, with Father Joseph Donton officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's of Woods Catholic Cemetery in Princeville. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Mason-White Funeral in Washington, with recitation of the rosary at 6 p.m., and one hour visitation prior to services at the church.
