Born at home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on January 25, 1920, to Hazel Graham and Harold Andrews, "Andy" Andrews quietly passed away in Grass Valley, California on May 21, 2007 after a brief illness. Enlisting in the Iowa State National Guard in August 1936, Andy eventually enlisted in the regular Army in August 1939 to serve with the 14th Calvary Regiment (Horse) at Fort Des Moines, Iowa. Not getting along well with horses, Andy transferred to the Philippines in July 1940 to serve as a medic at Sternberg General Hospital in Bataan. At the outbreak of the war in the Pacific, Andy was captured in Bataan, but escaped to Corregidor while participating in the "Bataan Death March". Andy was captured on May 6, 1942 with the fall of Corregidor to the Japanese. Internment during the war included Corregidor, Cabanataun, Bilibid, Fukuoku and Jinsen (Inchon), Korea. Transported to Moji, Japan on the "Hell-Ships" Oryoku Maru, Enoura Maru and Brazil Maru, Andy was eventually liberated by American Forces at Inchon, Korea on September 9, 1945. After liberation and discharge as a Staff Sergeant, Andy met and married Marjorie Marie Kane. Reenlisting in the Army, Andy attended Infantry OCS and subsequently served as a Lieutenant in the 82nd Airborne. Promoting to Captain, Andy volunteered for the 10th Special Forces Group, where he tested his skills in skydiving and glider flight. During the Korean conflict, Andy was a participant in the United Nations Partisan Forces, Korea. Retiring from the Army in 1959, Andy was employed by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command and Department of the Army. While a Civil Servant, Andy seved at White Sands Missile Range, Guam, Pearl Harbor, NAS Lemoore and Frankfurt, Germany until his retirement in 1978. Once retired, Andy perfected his golf game, traveled the world with Marjorie, and volunteered his services to numberous organizations while residing in North San Diego County. Andy's memberships included Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3795, Special Forces Association, American Ex-Prisoners of War, Military Officers Association of America and National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Since moving to Grass Valley, Andy was associated with American Legion Post 0130. Marjorie preceded Andy in death on November 6, 2005 after almost 60 years of marriage.
