Robert was born June 1, 1921 in Malden, Porter, Indiana to William Harrison and Grace Pearl Herron Blackburn. He was named for his paternal grandfather, James Robert Blackburn and his maternal grandfather, William M. Herron. He was the third child after two daughters, Lenora Grace and Mildred. There was one more daughter born after Robert named Helen Arlene. Robert's mother died when he was three, of peritonitis from a ruptured appendix. The children were sent to live with his mothers brothers and sisters families. Robert spent most of his time with his Uncle Ralph Herron and his family. After his father married again he spent some time with with his father. He went to a CC camp when he was sixteen and then joined the
Army with his father signing for him to join. While Robert was in the army and stationed at Jefferson Barricks in St. Louis, Missouri he met Clara Louise Van Horn. They were married June 7, 1941 and had two sons, Robert William Jr.(Bobby) and William Daniel (Billy). They then divorced.
Robert while stationed in Germany had a daughter named Roberta. In June of 1949 he remarried Clara in Seattle, Washington and they had three more children before his discharge from the army and two children after his discharge. (Richard Lee, Janet Joanne, Judy Grace, Herbert Allen, and Jimmy Dee). Robert spent 16 years in the Army, spending time in South Africa, Germany, Korea, and many of the states. Robert and Clara settled in East Gary, Indiana with their family where they lived together until Robert died Dec. 19, 1976. He is buried in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Hobart, Indiana.
