"Deceased was born in Cumberland County, Va, on September 19, 1832. When but six weeks old his parents moved from his birthplace to the State of North Carolina, where seven years later his mother died. On May 20, 1858 he was married in Henderson County, Tenn., to Miss Susan J. Bell. Five children blessed this union, and all are living. They are Mrs. B.E. Nobles of Farwell, J.W. Baughn of Mineral Wells, G.C. Jr. of near Blossom, W.L. of Deport and M.H. of Paris.

When the war between the states came he enlisted in the Confederate army, joining Co. F of Col. Bowder's First Tennessee Infantry, in Cheatham's Division of Hardy's Corps. His first fight was at Fort Henry, and then came Shiloh and Corinth before the Atlanta campaign. He participated in the battle of Peach Tree Creek and also in the historic engagement of July 22, before Atlanta. He was later wounded while engaged in sharp shooting, the ball passing thru the palm of his hand and caused his discharge from service in 1864.

Returning to his home and family, he found that little of his stock had survived the forage of both armies. With grim fortitude he began again the building of his life and fortune. In late 1880 the family moved to Texas, locating near Clarksville. A year later they moved to Deport, and purchased a farm of 100 acres on the edge of town. This he farmed until declining years and his crippled hand forced his retirement."
