Elizabeth Richard Venable was the youngest of 6 children. Her father, William Venable was the Clerk of the Superior Court of Atlanta for 20 years. She was born two months after her father died.
When my grandmother was young, she went to Havana with her older brother Samuel H. Venable. Sam was supplying the granite for the harbor jetties. Americans had quite a few socials in Havana in those days. Lizzie, as her family called her, had met Captain Sigby and the young officers of the USS Maine at parties. After the USS Maine blew up, Lizzie visited the hospital daily to bring food, flowers and cheer to the wounded Americans. She visited with each and wrote letters for them. Captain Sigby was so appreciative of her kindness towards all his men, that he gave her a silver Spanish type comb, lady's wore in their hair and an ivory fan. These were some of the items divers brought up from the sunken Maine, gifts bought to bring home to his family.
She married Frank Tucker Mason, son of William Mason and Ella Jane Tucker, on 29 Aug 1906 at "Mont Rest" Stone Mtn., DeKalb Co., GA. She lived in 1914 at Ponce de Leon Ave., "Stonehenge", Druid Hills, Atlanta, DeKalb Co., GA. She and her family moved into the house at it's completion in 1914. Elizabeth and Frank had two children, Leila Venable Mason Eldridge (1909-1959)and Samuel Venable Mason (1913-1988).
