On December 10 1904, while he was a student at the College of Charleston, Charleston SC, he, along with fellow students Andrew Kroeg and Harry Mixson, founded the fraternity Pi Kappa Phi. The fraternity now has 153 active chapters and 93 alumni groups.

He was a principal for 25 years at the Charleston School District. After he retired in 1958 he became the chief US probation officer for the Eastern District of South Carolina, a position he held for 15 years. He was a member of the Cathedral of St John the Baptist, Knights of Columbus, Washington Light Infantry, St Andrew's Society and the South Carolina Historical Society.
