Richard was born in Cherokee Co., Alabama but came with his parents to Arkansas at a young age and was living in Clark Township, Johnson Co., Arkansas when the 1860 U.S. Federal Census was taken. He was fifteen years old at that time.
It appears he enlisted as a soldier when the Civil War was well underway and died shortly thereafter. Richard was eighteen years old when he enlisted on January 1, 1865 at Little Rock, Arkansas as a Private. He was mustered into "B" Co., Arkansas 4th Calvary and died of disease on February 3, 1865 at Little Rock.
