John McPherson was a native of Scotland, though his parents are currently unknown. (According to his Michigan death certificate, McPherson died at age 60 years, 3 months and 5 days, making his date of birth March 30, 1826.) As a young man he emigrated to North America, finding his way to St. Clair Co., MI. In the early 1850s John married a woman whose name is currently unknown but who died before 1855. The couple had at least one child, Tabitha (b. ca. 1852). On January 7, 1855, John married Pamelia Allen Campfield (1820-1912), a young widow with six children. At first the large, blended family lived on the Campfield farm in Clyde, St. Clair Co. There they had four additional children: Charles Angus (b. 1855), Alvin Donald (b. 1858), Mary Louise (b. 1860), and Jane (b. ca. 1865). The family eventually moved to Port Huron, St. Clair Co., where John found work as a mason and school janitor. They lived at 1423 McPherson St. John was active in civic affairs, and he and his wife helped to organize the local chapter of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. He died of rheumatism at the age of sixty.
