William Fontaine, Lieutenant Colonel, Revolutionary War, son of Peter and Elizabeth Winston Fontaine, was born on 22 January 1754 in Lunenburg County, Virginia, and moved with his parents the following year to Halifax County. In 1759 the family moved to northwestern Hanover County to be near his maternal grandparents. His father purchased the Beaverdam tract where the family made their home in Rock Castle.
