Mrs. Abel died Saturday, June 23, 2001, at a Topeka care facility.
She was born July 30, 1906, in Oskaloosa, the daughter of Charles Henry and Sylvia Jane (Patterson) Douglas. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1924 and lived in the Perry area for 62 years.
Mrs. Abel was a homemaker and assisted her husband in farming. She also worked as a telephone operator in Lawrence for several years. She was a member of Perry United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Happy Hour Club, Rural Hope Club and Perry Senior Citizens.
She married James Bird Abel on Jan. 19, 1928, in Lawrence. He died April 21, 1985.
Other survivors include three sons, Clifford Abel, Estes Park, Colo., James Abel, Topeka, and Duane Abel, Perry; two daughters, Colleen Trude and Donna Brown, both of Perry; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
