James Merle “Jim” Abel, 81, Topeka, formerly of Perry, died Sunday, November 5, 2017 at his home. He was born December 26, 1935 in Grantville, the son of James Bird and Josephine Belle Douglas Abel. He was a 1953 graduate of Perry Rural High School. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving from 1959 to 1961. He worked for Goodyear Tire Company in Topeka 34 years, retiring as a Supervisor in 2001. He had formerly worked for the Kansas Dept of Transportation for several years. He and his wife, Ava, formerly owned and operated the Billtown Café. He was a 50 year member of Perry Masonic Lodge #415 AF & AM. He was married to Ava Ellen Barnett on April 2, 1961 in Perry, She preceded him in death on January 25, 2013. He is survived by, one son, Scott , one daughter, Glenna , one brother, Clifford , two sisters, Colleen and Donna, two grandchildren, Justin and Perry, three great-grandchildren, Cameron, Ella, and Morgan, and one great-granddaughter (Tenley) on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Duane E. Abel. Funeral Service at 10:00 AM, Thursday, November 9, at Barnett Family Funeral Home, Oskaloosa. Visitation 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Wednesday. Burial at Buster Cemetery, Northeast of Perry. Memorials to Great Lakes Hospice c/o the Funeral Home, P.O. 602, Oskaloosa, KS, 66066.
