Mrs. Near was in her 78th year, having been born in Lockport, New York. Her parents soon moving to Chautauqua Co. and there Mary Bristol lived until her marriage to W.F. Near at Jamestown, New York, Mar. 12, 1843, when she was but 15 years of age.
In the fall of the same year, Mr. & Mrs. Near came to Mich. and thence to Mason, by way of Jackson. At that time the northern portion of Jackson was but a marsh, and as the young couple came through that city they saw boys fishing where now there are crowded streets and tall buildings.
In the spring of 1844, they took charge of the Ingham County Poor Farm as keeper & matron retaining that position for 4 years, at the end of which they took up a farm 2 miles west of Mason.
Since 1865 they have resided within the city and it is said of Mr. Near that he paid taxes longer than any other Mason citizen.
Besides her husband, who is 86, Mrs. Near is survived by a brother, ex-Judge of Probate, George W. Bristol of Mason and 5 children. W.L. Near of Jackson, Emily Watson of Lansing, Lucinda Seely of Pontiac and Luella VanCamp of Ft. Wayne,Indiana. She leaves 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grand children.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Martha, and daughter Elvia Anne Vandercook.
