Mrs. John I. Colgan, 85, died Friday, August 11, 1961 in the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gasperich in Peoria, with whom she had lived for the past 10 years.
Sophia Coyle, the daughter of Emmanuel and Frances Smeetam Coyle was born in Oak Hill August 31, 1875. She was united in marriage to John I. Colgan October 19, 1909 in St. Mary’s church in Princeville. She lived most of her life in the Wyoming community. She was a member of St. Dominic’s Altar and Rosary Society, the Dominican Tertiary and St. Cecilia’s church of Peoria for the past ten years.
She is survived by two daughters, Sister Maurita, the former Germain Colgan of Baltimore, MD and Mrs. Mary Alice Gasperich, three sons, John Emmanuel Colgan of Chicago, Joseph Colgan of Wyoming, and James Colgan of Elmwood; a sister, Mrs. Grace Heagney of Deerfield and 15 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, four sisters, two brothers, and a grandchild.
Funeral services for Mrs. Colgan were held at 9 am Monday in St. Dominic’s church. Officiation at the mass were a nephew, Rev. Fr. Edmund Blough of St. Patrick’s in Seneca, celebrant; Rev. Fr. James M. Fitzgerald of St. Marks in Peoria, deacon Rev. Mr. John Real of Wyoming, sub-deacon and Rev. Fr. Francis Cahill of Immaculate Conception in Streator, Master of Ceremonies Reve. Fr. EJ Bratkowski, pastor of St. Dominic’s delivered the sermon. Also present in the sanctuary was Rev. Fr. Daniel Sheeman of St. Patrick’s in Elmwood.
Patrick Collins, the organist, was assisted in the singing by Peggy O’Neill.
Interment was in St. Dominic’s cemetery in Wyoming.
