Mary was married to John Thayer on 12-1-1871 in Aurelius, Michigan. She was the daughter of Peter Benallack (8-9-1801 - 2-6-1883) and Mary Jane Hocking (1-26-1807 - 5-26-1880). Mary's siblings were:

Philip Peter 1845 - 1894
Both her parents are buried in the Mason Maple Grove Cemetery.

Mary Ann came to America in 1851, when she was 9. She was a housewife and a school teacher. She died of apoplexy at her son's house.

After her husband, John, left her, she stayed on the 40 acre farm and made a living for herself and her childen.

In 1908 she bought 6 sites on a lot in Mason Cemetery for $2.50. Her 2 infant children, 2 adult sons and a daughter-in-law are buried with her.

While in the Dakota's, John divorced her. There was a court battle over the farm, which was not settled until after John's death. The courts awarded the farm to Mary.
