In 1902, Bessie's father and his second wife, Della Lorena Manning, moved the family from Richmond County to Buie in Burnt Swamp Township, Robeson County, North Carolina. Della was Bessie's stepmother for 8-1/2 years, until her death in 1906. There were eight children in the household ranging in age from 18 through 8 months, with Bessie being the oldest.
In 1907, at age 19, Bessie married Robert Holderfield, a railroad employee. Later that year, her father married Mary Catherine Terry and three additional siblings would be born, for a total of 11 McLeod children.
Bessie and Robert moved first to Wake County, North Carolina, and then permanently to Virginia. They were the parents of nine children, including one set of twins. The family settled in Portsmouth. Bessie returned to North Carolina for family reunions.
When Bessie passed away at age 98, she had outlived her two sisters, two brothers, and four (of 6) half-siblings. She would be the longest lived of the 11 siblings. Her last sibling, half-sister Laura, passed at age 94 in October 2010. The last of Robert and Bessie's children passed away in March 2010.
[Buie is a tiny farming town shown on census records as Burnt Swamp, Philadelphus or Red Springs over time. The McLeod farm house and 44 acres remain intact as of 2012 but passed out of the family in 1968.]
