Leon G. "Bud" Ballard, 82, of Columbia died Monday, July 14, 1997, in Columbia. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 18, at Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. John Foley officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 17, at the funeral home. Mr. Ballard was born Nov. 23, 1914, in Sturgeon to Spillman and Lucy May Allen Ballard. He married Irene Hinshaw on Aug. 9, 1941, in Columbia, and she preceded him in death Oct. 17, 1994. Early in his life, Mr. Ballard was active in boxing and graduated from Hickman High School in 1936. He served in the Army Air Forces in World War II. Among other commendations, he received three Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart and the Silver Star. Before retiring in December 1976, Mr. Ballard worked for Universal Foods Corp. (Red Star Yeast Co.) of Kansas City for 24 years. He also managed the Mid-West Auto Store in Columbia for 16 years. Mr. Ballard was a former commander of VFW Post 3014 in Higbee, was a member of VFW Post 6276 in Centralia and was a current member of VFW Post 280 in Columbia. Survivors include a son, William Robert Ballard of Leawood, Kan.; a daughter, Betty Akers of Kansas City; and five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

On August 9, 1941, in Columbia, MO, he married Irene Hinshaw, who preceded him in death on October 17, 1994. Mr. Ballard was active in the sport of boxing from 1931 to 1936. He won Light-Weight Golden-Gloves title 1934-1935. He graduated from Hickman High School, Columbia, MO, in 1936. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was a tail gunner on a B-17 Bomber that was shot down in Yugoslavia in 1941. His combat service began in North Africa in 1942, with the 463rd Bomb Squadron of the 15th Air Force. He was awarded the Sharp Shooters Medal, three Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart, and the Silver Star. He was area Sales Manager for (Red Star Yeast Co.) Universal Foods Corp. of Kansas City for 24 years, retiring in December of 1976. He managed Mid-West Auto Store in Columbia for 16 years, except for three years in the Air Force from October 13, 1942, to October 23, 1945. He was Commander of V.F.W. Post 3014 in Higbee, MO, form 1989 to 1990. He was also a member of Centralia V.F.W. Post 6276, and was a current member of the V.F.W. Post 280 in Columbia, MO. Mr. Ballard was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, three brothers and two sisters.
