COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. Graveside service for Helen Statler Conn, 97, Colorado Springs, Colo., will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rosedale Cemetery in Ada with the Rev. David McCann officiating.

Mrs. Conn died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008.

Arrangements are under direction of Criswell Funeral Home, Ada.

She was born Dec. 20, 1910, in Elk City, to Claude and Iva Ellegood. She moved to Lawton in 1916, where she attended local schools including Cameron State Agricultural College. She became one of the first female pilots in Oklahoma, and flew with Amelia Earhart. During the Great Depression she worked for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) on local projects including "Lake Helen." She married James J. Statler in May 1937 in El Reno. They moved to Ada, and later moved to Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where she worked in and headed many charitable organizations including Easter Seals and the Symphony Guild. After her husband retired in 1967, they returned to Ada, where they were members of First Presbyterian Church. Later, as a widow, she married her lifelong friend Jack T. Conn in 1985 and moved to Oklahoma City. At his death, she moved to Colorado Springs to be closer to her daughter. When she was 84, she went on a camel safari at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro and recently went dog sledding in Alaska.

Survivors include a daughter, Jimmy Sue Guggenhime; a sister, Francis Griffin; a granddaughter and her husband, Kristin and Brian Wellens; a grandson, David Guggenhime; great-grandchildren: Jacob Guggenhime and Garrett Statler Wellens; and many close nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Florence Wade; and two brothers: Richard and Don Ellegood.
